The efficient management of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), the challenge of a cleaner future

The quality of life, the future of the planet and human health all depend on the crucial choices we make every day. A society whose primary activity is to consume without recycling is undoubtedly prone to chaos.

cubuletze_rrThe uncontrolled circuit of waste can be seen, by some of us, as a trivial and insignificant imperfection of the whole ecosystem, but the inadequate storage thereof can have negative effects, and the disposal by unregulated processes generates harmful emissions and highly concentrated and extremely polluting waste. The electronic waste is responsible for 70% of all toxic materials existing in the landfills.
The Environ Association has set as its goal, from the very beginning, to be a catalyst for the efforts of public authorities, of manufacturers and distributors of EEE, as well as for the efforts of the general population, for a responsible management of what remains after the natural or technical depletion of these products.

Overview
The Environ Association is a non-profit collective organization, aimed at taking over the responsibilities of the manufacturers and importers regarding the collection, the treatment, the recovery and the environmentally sound disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), as set out in the Government’s Order no. 448/2005.
To attain this objective, the Environ Association has developed an effective system for the takeover and recovery of WEEE, in compliance with the legislation and with the objectives of the National Waste Management Strategy and of the National Waste Management Plan, with a permanent optimization of the operating costs.

Objectives
The main objective of the Environ Association is to meet the collection, reuse, recycling and recovery targets for WEEE, corresponding to the market shares of the members thereof, as provided for in the legislation.
The strategic objective of the Association is to organize and implement an efficient management system for the WEEE, which begins with the collection activity and ends after several stages, with the reuse of the resulting fractions.
The association promotes, as a priority objective, a preventive attitude, militating for the reuse, recycling and recovery of waste in other forms, with a view to minimize the amount of WEEE discarded in an uncontrolled manner and the negative impact thereof on the environment.

Results
a) Investment in the national infrastructure of the collection system (more than 400 fixed and mobile containers), including national and international retail networks: Domo, Carrefour, Auchan, Selgros, Metro, Kaufland, Real, Romstal, Asesoft Distribution, as well as the implementation of the software application for automatic processing and optimization of the collection of WEEE at the national level, in over 730 fixed operational collection points, in August 2009, entitled WEB WEEE;
b) More than 700 stores of the national retail network are currently receiving logistical support for the collection services, either through the Web WEEE software application, or directly, through the 27 regional collection centers of ENVIRON;
c) Over 7500 tons of WEEE collected, out of which more than 6000 tons recycled observing the highest standards;
d) Partnerships with local authorities which get involved directly in the waste management process, through the "One Day Collection" campaigns;
e) Implementation of educational programs and information/awareness campaigns regarding the benefits of the selective collection of WEEE; due to the large number of campaigns initiated and financed by ENVIRON, having as purpose both the information of the public and the buy – back actions, a major change has occurred in the mentality of the Romanian consumer concerning the "appreciation" of waste;
f) Cooperation with other similar organizations.
